1. Project Background

As the size of wind turbines continues to increase, the probability of being struck by lightning also grows. Lightning strikes may damage the wind turbine's control system, electrical equipment, blades, and generator. It is estimated that lightning strikes account for 80% of wind turbine insurance claims and 60% of total blade losses. On average, each wind turbine suffers blade damage caused by lightning strikes once every 8.4 years. Calculated based on a 20-year service life of a wind turbine, the total number of blade damages caused by lightning strikes ranges from 2 to 3 times.

2. Solution

A DJI M350 RTK (or other UAVs can also be used) equipped with a retractable contact copper mesh flies to the area below the blade tip and makes contact with it. An automatic retractable winch is used, with one end connected to the ground detection instrument and the other end connected to the copper mesh. This setup is used to test whether the blade tip is conducting and to measure the resistance value.
